Conversations Matter: A Parent’s Guide to Talking About Rules at Home
Based on Episode 4: “RULES”
Use these four questions to help your child understand why rules at home matter, and how their attitude toward those rules can either build trust or break it.
1. “Why do you think parents set rules around things like screen time, grades, or chores?”
Purpose: Helps your child see the bigger picture behind rules and recognize that structure is part of love and guidance—not punishment.
2. “Have you ever felt like a rule at home was unfair? What happened when you pushed back—or when you cooperated?”
Purpose: Gives your child space to reflect on past experiences and see how their reactions influenced outcomes.
3. “What do you think your parents are trying to protect or teach you when they limit certain things?”
Purpose: Encourages empathy by helping your child consider the values or concerns behind parental decisions.
4. “What’s one way you could show more respect or gratitude when a rule feels frustrating?”
Purpose: Focuses on self-control and emotional maturity, and helps your child develop habits that lead to more trust and freedom.
Remember:
Rules may feel like limits—but they’re actually tools to help kids grow strong, balanced, and responsible. Teaching your child how to respond with respect and gratitude is one of the most powerful ways to help them thrive. Because in the end, Conversations Matter.
